Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The opening day of Brandon Wheat Kings' Main Camp is in the books.
Two games were played Friday at Westoba Place, including an exciting evening game that saw Team White score a dramatic 5-4 overtime victory over Team Black.
Ben McCartney's second goal of the game - at the 30 second mark - was the game winner for the Whites, who bounced back from a 6-1 loss to Team Gold in the morning scrimmage.
The game, which featured some excellent goaltending from the club's two 19-year old 'tenders, was tied at three when McCartney beat netminder Jiri Patera with just under five minutes to play in regulation time to give the Whites their first lead of the night.
The score stayed that way until Linden McCorrister beat Dylan Myskiw upstairs with fifteen seconds to play, setting the stage for McCartney's overtime heroics.
McCorrister's goal was the only shot to beat Myskiw, who begins the year as Brandon's returning veteran.
Patera meanwhile was the Wheat Kings second pick in June's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft and the Czech netminder, who spent the 2017-18 campaign in Cedar Rapids of the USHL, was chosen by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft.
Ridly Greig, Ty Lewis and Connor Gutenberg rounded out the scoring for the Whites while Callum Fortin, Ethan Whillans and Luka Burzan replied for the Blacks.
In the early game meanwhile, Ty Thorpe and Bode Hagen scored two goals each for Team Gold with singles coming off the sticks of Brayden Michalchuk and veteran Stelio Mattheos.
15-year old Cabrel LaBossiere scored in a losing cause for Team White.
Main Camp will continue Saturday with games at 10:30am and 6:00pm. Both will be open to the public.
Wheat Kings' camp concludes Sunday afternoon with the annual Intrasquad game at 2pm.
Brandon's 4-game pre-season schedule will begin a week from tonight against the visiting Regina Pats at Westoba Place.
Friday, September 7th is also Season Ticket Pick-up Day in the Keystone Centre's south parking lot.
