Portland Beavers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Mike Mooney homered twice and Scott McClain hit his 12th of the season and drove in four runs to back Ryan Sadowski's solid pitching effort as the Fresno Grizzlies avoided a sweep against the Portland Beavers with an 11-4 victory Monday night at Chukchansi Park.
Despite the loss, the Beavers (35-34) managed a 6-6 record on their lengthiest road trip since the 2003 campaign.
It was the first Triple-A victory for Sadowski (1-2), who was making his sixth start for the Grizzlies (33-37). The right-hander held Portland to a run, three hits and three walks while striking out four across his 5 1/3 innings to help the Grizzlies snap a four-game skid.
Will Venable, who hit safely in 11 of the 12 games on the road trip, had a two-run double, Vincent Sinisi drove in two runs and Matt Antonelli hit safely for a fourth straight game for the Beavers, who open a four-game series with Tucson at PGE Park Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
Brian Myrow drew two walks and was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Ranked among the league leaders in several hitting categories, Myrow batted .436 (17-for-39) with 16 walks and 11 runs scored during the 12-game road trip.
Cesar Ramos (6-6) went five innings and matched season highs by allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs (8 total) in the loss.
Mooney belted a second-inning solo shot off Ramos and hit an RBI double as part of Fresno's three-run third. McClain lifted a two-run homer to right-center field against Ramos to highlight another three-run rally in the fifth as the Grizzlies built an 8-0 advantage.
Sinisi's RBI single got the Beavers on the board in the top of the sixth, but Fresno countered with a run-scoring sac fly from McClain in the bottom of the inning and Mooney's solo homer off reliever Enrique Gonzalez in the seventh.
The Beavers trimmed the deficit to 10-4 in the eighth with Venable's double and a sac fly from Sinisi that plated Myrow.
McClain and Mooney each had three hits to lead the Grizzlies, who out-hit Portland 14-7.
NOTES: The Beavers activated pitcher Wil Ledezma before the game. Ledezma started the year with San Diego but was designated for assignment on June 10 ... the Beavers are 12-17 in games decided by five or more runs.
