Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Wilkin Castillo was 3-for-5 and broke a tie game with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning, and the Tucson Sidewinders scored three insurance runs in the ninth to defeat the Portland Beavers 7-3 Tuesday night at PGE Park.
Castillo's go-ahead hit came an inning after he singled and scored the tying run on an RBI double from Matt Morgan to knot things at 3-3. The Sidewinders (29-44) got an RBI single from Robby Hammock and a two-run double from Jesus Merchan to pad their lead in the ninth.
Jamie D'Antona hit his ninth home run of the year and Jailen Peguero (4-2) pocketed the win in relief for the Sidewinders, who improved to 15-26 on the road.
Nick Hundley and Will Venable homered for the Beavers (35-35), who had won their previous three games against Tucson. Hundley, who was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, reached on a leadoff walk to start the sixth, moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Vincent Sinisi and scored on a double-play groundout to give Portland a short-lived, 3-2 lead.
The loss went to Dirk Hayhurst (0-2), who gave up two runs and five hits in two innings of relief work behind starter Wade LeBlanc.
After striking out the side in the initial inning, LeBlanc gave up a leadoff solo homer to D'Antona in the second. Merchan then walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Phil Avlas to give Tucson a 2-0 lead.
LeBlanc, who received just his third no-decision of the season, was otherwise sharp in his six innings, fanning nine and holding the Sidewinders to two runs, three hits and three walks.
Venable clubbed a one-out solo homer in the second for Portland, his first since May 21, and Hundley knocked a solo shot off the upper part of the manual scoreboard in left-center to tie it in the fourth.
The two teams meet in the second game of their PGE Park series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The Padres recalled outfielder Chase Headley before the game. Headley collected two hits in his season debut in San Diego's 8-0 loss at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night ... LeBlanc has struck out eight or more batters four different times this season ... Hundley and Matt Antonelli, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the eighth, extended their hitting streaks to five games ... pitcher Wil Ledezma, added to the roster from San Diego on Monday, made his Beavers debut in relief ... the Beavers allowed a season-high four stolen bases.
