Ponies Split Doubleheader in Akron Friday Night, Win First Four Games of Series

AKRON, OH - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (35-32) split a doubleheader against the Akron RubberDucks (32-35) on Friday night at Canal Park. Binghamton is now 3-0-3 in doubleheaders this year.

Game One: Rumble Ponies 4, Fisher Cats 3 (7)

The Rumble Ponies scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on two Akron errors to take their first lead of the game. In the frame, Rowdey Jordan reached on a fly ball that dropped behind the left fielder. Two batters later, with Jordan on third and one out, Brandon McIlwain hit a ground ball to short that was bobbled, and the throw home was late as Jordan scored.

Down 3-1 in the fifth, Binghamton plated two as Jose Peroza drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2. McIlwain was the next batter and RHP Bradley Hanner immediately threw a wild pitch allowing the tying run to score.

Matt O'Neill finished 2-3 with an RBI Double. It was the Ponies season-high tying fifth straight win and ensures them a series victory.

Game Two: RubberDucks 4, Rumble Ponies 2 (8)

Akron scored the game-tying run in the top of the seventh on a Joe Naranjo RBI single and scored three in the top of the eighth to take a 4-1 lead.

Agustin Ruiz hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth that scored McIlwain and cut the deficit to 4-2. Binghamton brought the tying run to the plate, but Warren Saunders struck out to end the game.

The Rumble Ponies got on the board first in the bottom of the third on a Jose Mena RBI double that scored Brandon McIlwain.

Binghamton starter RHP David Griffin pitched five scoreless frames allowing just four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the RubberDucks on Saturday night with first pitch at 7:05 PM with the NYCM Insurance Pregame Show getting underway at 6:50 PM.

Postgame Notes: Wyatt Young had a hit in each game of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to 11 games...Jose Peroza reached base safely in both games to extend his on-base streak to 15 games...the Ponies suffered their first loss of the season (4-1) when a game as part of a doubleheader goes to extra innings.
