Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Left fielder Robbie Podorsky went off on Friday night at Parkview Field to help the TinCaps win the series opener against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers), 5-2.
Podorsky went 5-for-5, with four singles, a triple, two RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a sensational diving catch. The five-hit game was the first five-hit performance for a TinCap since Franmil Reyes (who's now with the San Diego Padres) went 5-for-5 on September 7, 2015, against the Bowling Green Hot Rods in a 17-0 win at Parkview Field.
Great Lakes (24-42) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. With Brayan Morales at third, Jared Walker hit a ground ball to score Morales and give the Loons an early 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne (30-37) quickly responded in the bottom of the frame. After an infield single and a stolen base from Podorsky, designated hitter Luis Campusano hit an RBI single to left to tie the game, 1-1.
The bottom of the third saw more action from Podorsky. After a leadoff triple to the left-field corner, he scored when center fielder Jeisson Rosario hit a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the TinCaps a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth inning, first baseman Nick Feight doubled and Podorsky provided a two-out RBI single to plate Feight and give Fort Wayne a 3-1 edge.
The Loons struck back in the top of the fifth. Brandon Montgomery fired a solo shot to left-center field to shrink Fort Wayne's lead to 3-2.
The TinCaps were able to break it open in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Podorsky singled on a bunt attempt, scoring right fielder Jack Suwinski from third. Second baseman Esteury Ruiz followed with an RBI triple to right-center field to score Podorsky from first and put Fort Wayne ahead, 5-2.
Podorsky capped off his incredible night with a diving grab in the bottom of the ninth to help preserve the 5-2 lead.
TinCaps starting pitcher Luis Patiño went four innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out five batters. Patiño is the second youngest pitcher in the Midwest League at just 18 years old.
After middle relief from Korey Anderson (two innings) and Fred Schlichtholz (1 2/3 innings), Evan Miller earned the save-his second of the season-by recording the final four outs.
With the win, the TinCaps continued their home success, as they improved to 19-14 at Parkview Field this season. Friday night was the first of 10 straight at home for Fort Wayne.
