Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Loons' offense sputtered with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 men on base in a 5-2 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) on a warm Friday night at Parkview Field.
With the temperatures in the low 90s for much of the day and at 88 degrees at the time of first pitch, the Loons generated 10 or more hits for the third game in a row, but scuttled in the run department against Fort Wayne in the series opener.
Four batters, including Moises Perez, Darrell Miller and Brock Carpenter, each enjoyed multi-hit nights for the Loons. The team's designated hitter, Brandon Montgomery, batted 2-for-4 with a solo home run walloped 421 feet to left-center field that made the score 3-2 in the fifth inning.
The Loons stranded multiple men on base in five innings. In the seventh, with two outs and runners on first and second, Marcus Chiu was hit in the shoulder by an 0-2 pitch from left-hander Fred Schlichtholz. Home plate umpire Jake Botek disallowed the hit-by-pitch and ruled Chiu did not do enough to remove himself from the path of the baseball. Loons' field manager John Shoemaker was ejected for the first time this season in protest of the call. After Chiu struck out swinging on the next pitch, he, too, was ejected from the game.
The game remained a one-run affair until there were two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nine-hole hitter Jack Suwinski rallied from a 1-2 count to work a walk off fellow lefty Justin Hoyt. On ball one to the next batter, Miller, the Loons' catcher, attempted to pick off Suwinski, but threw the ball up the right-field line, which allowed Suwinski to advance to third on the error. Robbie Podorsky then scored Suwinski on a bunt single misplayed by Hoyt, who failed to secure the ball in his glove in the grass south of the mound. Esteury Ruiz tripled in the next at-bat to score Podorsky and make the score 5-2. Podorsky batted 5-for-5 with two runs, a triple, two RBI and two stolen bases.
The Loons return to Parkview Field for game two of their three-game series at Fort Wayne on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. EDT first pitch.
