Buffalo Bisons News Release
MOOSIC, PA - Led by a multi-homer night by Nick Podkul, the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 7-4 on Thursday night from PNC Park.
The night began with a bang when Chavez Young hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first, but Miguel Andújar responded with a solo blast of his own in the bottom half to even it up.
Both sides would trade runs in the third as well, when L.J. Talley scored on an error in the top half, before Oswaldo Cabrera drove in Tyler Wade with a sac fly in the bottom half.
The back-and-forth scoring continued when, after a leadoff single to start the fourth, Podkul went deep to put the Herd back on top, but Ronald Guzmán hit a two-run blast in the fifth to tie things up yet again. Podkul would then hit his second homer of the night in the sixth to put the Bisons up 5-4.
Thomas Hatch, meanwhile, made the start and went six innings for the third time in his past four starts, allowing four runs off five hits with no walks and three punchouts.
Following Hatch was righthander Sean Rackoski, who made his Triple-A debut after being recalled from Double-A New Hampshire. Rackoski, who went 5-1 with a 6.03 ERA in 34.1 innings spread over 29 games for the Fisher Cats, threw a scoreless seventh in his Bison debut.
Hayden Juenger did the same in the eighth, though not without major help from his defence. With two away and the tying run in scoring position, a base hit to left field saw Andújar try to score from second. A terrific throw by Logan Warmoth, and an equally impressive diving tag by Stevie Berman, ended the inning with the Herd's lead still intact.
The Bisons would add on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Young tripled home Eric Stamets, before Young scored on an RBI single by Cullen Large. Juenger then stayed on for the ninth with a three-run lead and finished things off despite allowing the first two baserunners to reach.
The Bisons and RailRiders will continue their series tomorrow night, with first pitch coming at 6:35 p.m. EST.
