Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - A night after smacking a season-high five home runs, Wilmington let their pitching take center stage in defeating Winston-Salem 3-1 on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Three Blue Rocks hurlers combined to hold the Dash to three hits while striking out nine to extend their season-high winning streak to a season-high 10 games.

The Dash scored first when designated hitter Seth Loman blasted a solo home run off Mario Santiago to lead off the bottom of the second inning. That would be his only mistake as Santiago would not allow another hit as he set down the next 15 batters in order, including five strikeouts. He tossed six innings and held Winston-Salem to one run on two hits. Santiago (6-11), who paces the league with 11 losses, did not surrender a walk and struck out five to collect the win.

The Blue Rocks picked up a pair of clutch two-out hits off Dash starting pitcher Jacob Rasner in the top of the fourth inning to move in front for good. With one away, Nick Van Stratten ripped a double and moved to third on a ground out by Eric Hosmer. Paulo Orlando, who spent nearly two full seasons playing for Winston-Salem in 2007 and 2008, lined a two-out RBI single against his former club to even the score. Orlando then stole second and scored on Jamar Walton's two-out single to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Rocks took advantage of a Dash mistake to add an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Derrick Robinson reached on a bunt single and a throwing error on the play by first baseman Jimmy Gallagher allowed Robinson to race to second. One batter latter, Mike Moustakes lined an RBI single into center field to put Wilmington in front 3-1.

The Blue Rocks bullpen picked up right where Santiago left off as Danny Gutierrez worked a pair of hitless frames and Brandon Sisk recorded the final three outs to garner his 13th save of the season.

Rasner (3-3) worked a solid six innings and limited Wilmington to two runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out five, but suffered the loss.

Winston-Salem and Wilmington conclude this three-game series on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Levi Maxwell (4-10, 4.32) to the mound, while the Blue Rocks are expected to start LHP Michael Montgomery (0-0, 3.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
