Frederick Keys News Release
For the second night in a row, the Frederick Keys had a double-digit hit total. Unlike Monday night, however, the Keys won. Frederick outslugged the Potomac Nationals on Tuesday night, winning 7-3.
Frederick had RHP Kenny Moreland on the mound for his first start since mid-June. The P-Nats got to him in the second. 1B Chris Marrero led off the inning with a solo homerun, giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead.
Potomac tacked on another run in the third. With two down, SS Danny Espinosa hit an opposite field homerun to left, making it 2-0.
The P-Nats had Washington Nationals RHP Jordan Zimmermann on the mound. Zimmermann, who was put on the Disabled List after feeling discomfort in his right elbow, was lights out through the first three frames, but found himself in a little trouble in the fourth. Frederick 1B Robbie Widlansky led off the inning with a solo homerun to deep right field, making it 2-1. A batter later, with one man down, C Caleb Joseph hit a line drive right back to the mound. It hit off of Zimmermann. He picked the ball up and threw wildly to first, allowing Joseph to get into second.
Zimmermann exited following the come backer, and in came RHP Brad Peacock. The next batter, LF Tyler Henson knocked in Joseph with an RBI-double, tying the game at two.
Zimmermann ended up going 3.1 innings, and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. He walked one and struck out six.
The Keys weren't done in the fourth. DH Wally Crancer knocked in Henson with an RBI-single, giving Frederick a 3-2 lead. RF Billy Rowell then reached on an infield hit, putting two on with two out for CF Matt Angle. He came through with a double to center field. Crancer scored, but Rowell was thrown out at the plate. Frederick led 4-2.
Potomac cut the deficit in half in the fifth. Espinosa hit his second homer of the game, a solo line-drive shot to right, pulling the Nationals to within one.
Frederick began to pull away in the seventh. Angle and SS Pedro Florimon hit back-to-back singles to start off the inning. They moved up a base on a wild pitch. Widlansky then knocked them both in with a single, making it a 6-3 ball game.
The Keys tacked on another run in the eighth. With runners on the corners and one down, Widlansky came through once again with an RBI-single, making it 7-3.
Widlansky ended up going 3-5 on the night with a homerun and four runs batted in.
Moreland (2-0) got the win for Frederick. Peacock (1-1) took the loss. In his first Carolina League appearance, RHP Brandon Cooney (1) retired the final four batters in succession to pick up the save.
The rubber game of this three-game series will be played Wednesday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. It's Fairy Tale Night at the ballpark. Frederick will have RHP Sean Gleason atop the hill. For ticket info, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
