Tribe Talk....
Erroneous On Both Counts-A big ninth inning error doomed Kinston, as Lynchburg broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning to get past the K-Tribe 2-0 Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. In the top of the ninth inning Lynchburg speedster Jose De Los Santos reached base with a one-out walk. A ground ball off the bat of the Hillcat's Chase d'Arnaud was then booted by Kinston shortstop Ronald Rivas, allowing De Los Santos to get to second and d'Arnaud to reach first safely. Rivas was charged with his 20th error of the season. Josh Harrison then bounced into a fielder's choice, moving De Los Santos to third. A two-out single by Jordy Mercer would bring home De Los Santos to break the scoreless tie. Harrison would score later on an RBI single from Matt Hague. Both runs were unearned off of K-Tribe reliever Dallas Cawiezell (1-4) who picked up the loss in his only inning of work. 16 Errors have been its main problem, leading to 18 unearned runs in the 15 games.
No Slump On The Bump-Kinston newcomer Scott Barnes was solid in his second start for the K-Tribe, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out three in 4 2/3 innings. Mike McGuire pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 inning from the bullpen. Santo Frias pitched two scoreless innings for Kinston, giving up two hits. Going into the ninth inning, Kinston pitching had not giving up a run in 17 innings, dating back to Saturday's shutout win at Myrtle Beach. In fact, The Indians have allowed just five runs in their last three games, and all five have come in the ninth frame. Kinston's team ERA is 3.42 over the last 10 contests. The starters have been great for three weeks now, having allowed just 34 ER in 113 innings over the last 21 games, an ERA of 2.71.
TIMMAAAAAA -After going 3-for-5 and recording a season-high 3-RBI on Saturday, Tim Fedroff followed it up with his fifth three-hit game of the season and extended his season-high on-base streak of 24 games, tied for the fifth longest streak this season in the Carolina League. It is currently the longest active streak among players still in the league. Four other Indians are among those with the 10 longest on-base streaks this season: Lonnie Chisenhall's 27 game on-base streak is the second longest this season; Matt McBride and Cord Phelps each had 24 game streaks and Matt Brown had a 21 game streak. Also, Kinston's Roman Pena owns the season's longest home on-base streak, stretching 26 games from April 16-July 12. Lucas Montero still owns the longest road-on base streak in the CL that started in August last season and ended on June 5th this season at 24 games. Trading Places-After last night's pitching battle featured two starters who had spent the majority of the season in a different league, tonight's pitching match-up involves two pitchers who have spent a large chunk of the season in the Carolina League, but with a different team. Kinston's Bryan Price makes his K-Tribe debut after pitching for Salem since the end of May, and Jeff Locke makes his 11th start for the Hillcats after starting 10 games for Myrtle Beach to begin the year. Price was traded with two other pitchers from Boston to Cleveland on Friday for All-Star Victor Martinez, and Atlanta traded Locke to Pittsburg for All-star Nate McLouth on June 4th.
From First To Worst-Lynchburg had the best record in the first half at 45-24 and won the won the northern division by seven games. But since seeing Pedro Alvarez, Miles Durham and Michael Dubee among others promoted to AA, it hasn't been the same story so far in the second half. The Hillcats started the second half 7-15 and are sitting in last place in the northern division. The good news for the Cats is that they have won four in a row, and have played .500 ball over the last two weeks. Kinston has hit well against Lynchburg this season, hitting .263 as a team, even though they are just 6-9 against them.
