Potomac Nationals News Release
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals will employ Washington Nationals right-hander and former distinguished alum Jordan Zimmermann to help the team claim their seventh consecutive series win when they play the Frederick Keys in the middle game of a three-game series from Harry Grove Stadium. Trent Jewett's club leads this "Battle of the Beltway" 11-4 with the P-Nats victorious in nine of the last 11 meetings.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Kenny Moreland, 23, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a non-drafted free agent on June 10, 2008 after attending Christopher Newport University. Moreland was born in Norfolk, VA but now resides in Springfield which is only an hour away from Harry Grove Stadium. Born April 2, 1986, Moreland began his professional career pitching for Bluefield of Appalachican League and finished seventh in ERA (2.93) and led the team with his six victories in 13 starts. He also was the team-leader in innings pitched (67.2) and strikeouts (65). Moreland did make the jump to the Carolina League in 2008 and lasted one game with the Keys where he allowed two runs on a pair of hits in 2.0 innings of work in a loss on August 30.
In 2009, Moreland has dominated the Short-Season New York-Penn League going 6-1 with an outstanding 0.88 ERA in eight starts with the Aberdeen Ironbirds. He walked just three batters compared with 39 strikeouts in 51.0 innings pitched and fired a seven-inning complete game shutout against Hudson Valley on July 25. He made two appearances in June with the Keys this season and went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in a pair of starts from June 10-15.
