Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem starting pitcher Justin Edwards was recently named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 27 - August 2. He becomes the second hurler and fifth Dash player honored with a weekly award this season joining fellow pitcher Levi Maxwell, second baseman Dale Mollenhauer and outfielders Tyler Kuhn and Salvador Sanchez.

Edwards, who was promoted from Low-A Kannapolis to Winston-Salem on June 18, made two starts last week and tossed 10 innings without allowing an earned run. In his first outing, the southpaw allowed an unearned run on three hits against Kinston on July 27, before being removed from the game after being hit on his left forearm by a line drive. He followed that performance with seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win against Potomac on Saturday, August 1. He held the Nationals to three hits and recorded a season-high five strikeouts.

In his first season in the Carolina League, Edwards is 3-2 with a 4.83 ERA in eight starts with the Dash, but his home/road numbers have varied mightily. The 21-year-old is 3-1 with a 2.56 ERA and a .214 opponents batting average in five road starts. He has fared much worse at Wake Forest Baseball Park where he is 0-1 with a 12.54 ERA in 3 starts with batters hitting .442 against him.

Edwards was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of the Olympia High School in Orlando. He originally intended on playing at the University of Georgia prior to signing with the White Sox. After missing all of 2008 while undergoing Tommy John surgery, he began this season with Low-A Kannapolis where he went 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 8 starts prior to his promotion to Winston-Salem.

The Orlando native made his professional debut with Rookie Bristol in 2006 where he went 3-7 with a 5.30 ERA in 12 starts. He spent entire 2007 season with Kannapolis and finished 6-9 with a 5.79 ERA in 27 appearances (21 starts).

The Dash and Blue Rocks continue their three-game series with game two on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The current home stand for the Dash runs from Monday, August 3 through Sunday, August 9 at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Promotions include, Web Wednesdays, Thirsty Thursday and Fireworks following Friday night's game. Fans can also take advantage of Domino's Family Fun Weekends on Saturday and Sunday.
