Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Kurt Wunderlich pitched six shutout innings and the Traverse City Beach Bums hit a pair of two-run homers in the late innings to propel the Beach Bums to a 4-0 win over the River City Rascals.
The win, combined with a Southern Illinois loss at Florence gives Traverse City a 4.5 game lead in the East Division with 13 games remaining.
Both starting pitchers were exceptional through the first five innings of play. Wunderlich allowed three hits through the first five, striking out six along the way. River City starter Tony Marsala was also dominant, not allowing Traverse City a hit through the first five frames.
Things changed in the sixth as Wunderlich (2-0) breezed through the Rascals in order. Marsala wasn't as lucky as with one out, Ryan Still delivered the first Beach Bums hit of the night with a single to center. Two batters later, Jose Vargas came up and drove a 1-0 fastball over the rightfield fence for his 27th homerun of the season to put TC up 2-0.
In the seventh, Traverse City saw the leadoff batter, Jeff Flagg, walk. After a strikeout, Sean Gusrang stood in and launched a towering homer to right for his 14th blast of the season and a 4-0 Beach Bums lead.
The runs were plenty for the Traverse City pitching staff as Wunderlich went 6+ innings, allowing four hits. Nick Capito came on in the seventh and pitched the final three innings scoreless, striking out four to notch his third save. Marsala (4-7) took the tough luck loss for the Rascals.
The series wraps up on Sunday with a FAMily Funday Sunday sponsored by Great Start/Way-To-Grow. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat, kids ages 5-12 can run the bases after the game and there will be a full team autograph session following the contest. Reid Kelly (8-3, 3.71) gets the start for the Beach Bums against Justin Sarratt (1-2, 6.65) for River City. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. For tickets call 943-0100 or log on to tcbeachbums.com.
