Greenville, SC - Kendal Volz pitched six strong innings for Greenville (54-43, 18-9), and Shannon Wilkerson hit a double off of the green monster in left field to drive in two runs and give the Drive a 3-1 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators (41-55, 10-17).
Volz and Jeremiah Bayer (6-1) matched up in a classic pitcher's duel against Kannapolis's starter Cameron Bayne (6-9). Volz and Bayer combined to allow nine hits and one run, shutting down the Intimidators' offense in order four times. Bayne allowed just five hits and two walks (one intentional) in his complete game effort.
Derrik Gibson led off the eighth inning for Greenville with a hit by pitch, and was sacrificed over by Zach Gentile. Cameron Bayne intentionally walked Chris McGuiness, but Shannon Wilkerson launched a high fly ball off the Green Monster to drive in both runners.
Volz allowed just six hits over the course of his start, striking out five. He loaded the bases in the fourth but sent the next two batters down to end the inning. He retired the last eight batters he faced in order.
After being shut down for five innings by Bayne, Greenville mustered just enough offense to get on the board. Christian Vazquez singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but he was erased on the basepaths by a fielder's choice.
Gibson, who reached on the fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Gentile was hit by a pitch before McGuiness hit into an RBI groundout. Bermudez walked to extend the inning, but Wilkerson grounded out to end the threat.
The Intimidators tallied a run in the eighth inning off of Bayer, who relieved Volz in the seventh inning. Leadoff man Daniel Wagner singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, and later scored on a single by Ian Gac. Bayer quickly got the next batter to end the inning.
Bayer allowed a leadoff double in the ninth, but shut down the next three batters in order to seal the victory for Greenville.
The Drive are now up 2-1 in the series, and will look to take the series against Kannapolis tomorrow night at Fluor Field. Greenville will send southpaw Manuel Rivera (3-7, 3.43 ERA) to toe the rubber versus Justin Collop (6-7, 4.83 ERA) of Kannapolis. The final game of the four-game homestand is set for 7:05pm.
Following tomorrow night's game, fans will be treated to fireworks display, set to the music of the Beatles. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
