LAKEWOOD, N.J. - A 4-0 Lakewood lead after the second inning was more than enough for starter Trevor May, and the BlueClaws offense kicked into gear late in a 10-1 drubbing of the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at FirstEnergy Park Thursday evening.
The BlueClaws crunched a season-high four-game skid in improving to 16-10, 58-38 overall, while Charleston falls to 13-14, 44-52 overall in suffering its worst loss of 2010.
Lakewood notched the four-run second against RiverDogs starter Josh Romanski to take a 4-0 lead. A one-out Charleston error opened the door for Anthony Hewitt's RBI single and a two-out, two-run single from Jonathan Villar. Only one of the tallies in the extended frame was earned.
Romanski (5-3) broke a four-game winning streak in falling for the first time since June 18. The former University of San Diego standout hummed 5.0 innings for the RiverDogs, allowing four runs - one earned - on four hits with three walks and six punchouts.
Charleston broke through against BlueClaws starter Trevor May in the sixth inning on Luke Murton's RBI single to cut the score to 4-1.
May (2-1) permitted the lone run in 6.0 strong innings in his fifth start back since being demoted from the High-A Florida State League. The Washington native gave up just four hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
Alan Schoenberger added a two-run double in the sixth for a 6-1 BlueClaws lead.
The seventh frame proved to be more lucrative with three more runs scoring against Gabriel Tatis on five straight hits for a 9-1 cushion. Jeremy Barnes chipped in with a RBI single and Hewitt drove home a run with a two-out double.
Pinch-hitter Kyle Lafrenz broke a 0-for-18 slump with a RBI double in the eighth off Jairo Heredia, who was activated from the DL earlier in the day, increasing he margin to 10-1.
Murton and Neil Medchill each had two hits for the RiverDogs.
Game four, set for Friday at 7:05 p.m., features Charleston right-hander and New Jersey native Sean Black (4-6, 4.54 ERA) pitching against Lakewood right-hander Colby Shreve (5-5, 3.57 ERA).
