Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets couldn't figure out Greensboro Grasshoppers starter Jose Alvarez all night long, with just four hits in an 8-1 loss to the `Hoppers on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Alvarez (8-3) fired seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out nine - one shy of a season-high. The win was the second in a row for Alvarez and it snaps Augusta's winning streak at three games. All three hits off Alvarez went for extra bases and the lone Augusta run scored on a two-out Chris Dominguez RBI double in the sixth. Dominguez was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple though to end the inning.
Jeremy Toole retired the first nine hitters of the game and struck out six of the first seven men he faced before running into trouble in the fourth. He allowed three hits in the inning with a run coming in on a groundball hit by Kyle Skipworth that was bobbled at short to put the Grasshoppers on the board in the fourth. Chad Cregar's RBI single later in the inning provided the `Hoppers with their second run.
Alvarez retired 11 straight after allowing a second-inning double to Hector Sanchez - a streak that was broken by Evan Crawford's two-out triple in the fifth. Crawford was stranded at third to end the inning with the Jackets trailing by a pair and that was as close as Augusta got the rest of the night.
The Hoppers scored four times in the sixth on five hits to pull away in the ballgame. Cregar doubled home a pair while Kyle Jensen singled in a run and Justin Bass doubled in another. In the seventh, Chase Austin's second double of the night brought in a run and Kyle Skipworth singled in another to push the Greensboro advantage to 8-1.
Toole (3-4) struggled after three perfect innings, allowing six runs - five earned - on seven hits and a walk in five innings. Toole struck out six in his first loss in over a month.
The GreenJackets will try to take three of four from the Grasshoppers and avoid the series split on Friday night when Jorge Bucardo (8-4, 2.38) takes the mound to face Chad James (3-6, 4.21). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
