Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

The West Virginia Power outlasted the Savannah Sand Gnats 7-6 in a 15-inning epic Thursday night in Charleston, West Virginia. The game ended with Savannah outfielder R.J. Harris pitching and walking in the winning run.

It was due in large part to Harris, that the Gnats even sent the game to extra-innings and his two-run triple in the 12th inning nearly won it for Savannah. In the 15th, Harris retired the first two Power batters before walking the next four to hand West Virginia its third victory in the series.

The Gnats rallied for a run to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth. Harris doubled to begin the inning, and after Alonzo Harris sacrificed him to second, R.J. Harris came home with the tying run on a fielding error on West Virginia RF Jose Hernandez.

The teams each scored twice in the 12th inning. With two outs in the top half of the inning, R.J. Harris tripled into right center field to drive home two runs and put Savannah ahead 6-4. However, Savannah closer Michael Powers, in his third inning of work could not hold the lead in the bottom half. Power 1B Aaron Baker led off the bottom of the 12th with a solo home run to bring the Power within a run at 6-5. After a walk, West Virginia LF Rogelio Noris doubled into left to drive home the tying run at 6-6.

Gnats 1B Travis Ozga drove home the first three Savannah runs. His first inning single plated RF Cesar Puello for a 1-0 Gnats lead. After the Power evened the game with a run in the second, Ozga's two-run single in the third made it 3-1 Savannah in the third inning.

The Gnats have now lost a season-high five straight games and eight of their last 10 contests.

Savannah will try to avoid the sweep Friday night in Charleston in the finale of this four-game series with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 7 pm. The Gnats head to Lexington, KY for four games beginning Saturday night.

Next Home Game

The Gnats return home to Historic Grayson Stadium on Thursday, July 29 to host the Augusta GreenJackets for a Thirsty Thursday where all beers and sodas are two-for-one thanks to Budweiser, Connect Savannah and Rock 106.1.
