Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -Despite a complete game effort from Cameron Bayne, Shannon Wilkerson with two on, two outs and two strikes hit a double off the wall in left to break a 1-1 tie and achieve a 3-1 victory for the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field. The Drive take a 2-1 series lead against the Intimidators with the win.
In a 1-1 game, Bayne pitching in his eighth inning, only the fourth time all season an Intimidators (10-17) pitcher has gone eight full innings, allowed a leadoff hit by pitch to Derrik Gibson who was sacrificed to second. With one out, the Intimidators serve Chris McGuiness a free pass before Bayne (6-9) struck out Ronald Bermudez. Down to his last strike, Shannon Wilkerson lofted a two-strike pitch off the wall in left, scoring two and proving the margin of victory.
Kendal Volz pitched six scoreless for the Drive (18-9) and did not pick up a decision. He stranded the bases loaded in the fourth after the Intimidators had runners at the corners with no one out and they did not score. The lone run for Kannapolis came in the eighth inning off Jeremiah Bayer (6-1) as Daniel Wagner singled to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to second and came home on an Ian Gac single, his third hit of the game.
The Intimidators out-hit the Drive in the game by four, but could not string hits together or get meaningful hits with runners in scoring position. The Intimidators had won three straight before the last two games, both losses.
Justin Collop, who dominated the Lakewood BlueClaws in his last start will look to continue his tremendous second half of the season as he takes to the hill against Manuel Rivera at 7:00 pm in the series finale on Friday.
