The Lexington Legends jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and then held on to beat the Rome Braves 3-2 Thursday night in Rome as closer Kirk Clark picked up a record-breaking 22nd save.
The Legends opened the scoring in the second inning. With two outs, Rene Garcia doubled, went to third on a bunt single by Grant Hogue, and came home on a wild pitch.
Lexington added two more runs in the third. With one out, Kody Hinze walked and came around to score on a triple to left center field by Jonathan Meyer. Renzo Tello's sacrifice fly scored Meyer and gave Lexington a 3-0 lead.
Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg put Rome on the board when he hit his first home run of the season leading off the fourth inning. The Braves cut the lead to one in the fifth inning on a triple by Edward Salcedo and a sacrifice fly by Jake Hanson.
Legends starter Jose Cisnero (5-5) pitched the first six innings to earn the victory. He allowed four hits and two runs, walked one batter and struck out four. Mike Schurz allowed one hit and fanned three in two scoreless innings before Clark relieved in the ninth. He retired Cunningham on a fly to left and struck out Christian Bethancourt before walking Salcedo. With Hanson at the plate, Salcedo tried to steal second, but was thrown out by Garcia for the final out, giving Clark the record-breaking save. Daniel Freeman saved 21 games for the Legends in 2003, and that had stood as both the Legends' single-season and career save records.
Rome starter Caleb Brewer (3-2) was the losing pitcher.
The series concludes Friday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
