Battle Creek, MI - The Pit Spitters lost to the Battle Creek Bombers 9-8 in the final game of the regular season.
The Pit Spitters finish the season 8-4 over the Bombers with a run differential of 96-51.
The Pit Spitters led 2-0 after the top of the first without putting a ball in play, getting four walks and a hit by pitch. After a Bomber run in the bottom half, the Pit Spitters got it back in the second on a Trey Yunger sac fly. Yunger singled home another run in the fourth to make it 5-1.
The Bombers answered with a big six-run fifth inning. 12 batters came to the plate, collecting seven hits.
The Pit Spitters started chipping away, scoring two runs in the sixth on a Zeb Roos single and a run in the seventh on a Logan Hylek groundout. The Pit Spitters entered the ninth down one. Camden Traficante singled to start the inning, but a strike em out throw em out eliminated Traficante for the second out. Logan Hylek hit a clutch two-out double to set up the game-tying RBI single from Mario Camilletti.
In the end, though, the Bombers loaded the bases in the ninth and walked off the final regular season game of the season.
The Pit Spitters finish the regular season 42-29 with very similar halves (21-15 first half, 21-14 second half.)
The Pit Spitters finish the season second all-time in Northwoods League history with 416 walks. They finished two walks shy of the record, despite playing one less game than Waterloo in 2019.
They also finished fifth in league history with 179 stolen bases.
Chris Monroe ends the season as the league leader in RBI's with 59, six more than the next closest player. He is the single-season franchise leader in RBI's (59) and home runs (7). Monroe is tied for 21st all-time in single-season RBI's.
Mario Camilletti ends the season as the league leader in walks with 58. He fell one RBI short of the franchise record 59, which he set in 2019. Camilletti is tied for 12th all time in single-season walks.
Cam Schuelke ended the season with a 0.68 ERA. The Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year was four innings shy of qualifying for the lowest ERA in league history (0.74, Tom Oldham, 2001 Wisconsin Woodchucks).
