Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - Michael Leighton posted his first shutout of the season with a 35-save performance and Garrett Roe contributed a two-point night to lead the Adirondack Phantoms to a 3-0 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of 4,155 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Roe and fellow rookie forward Tyler Brown each tallied their first professional goals and Harry Zolnierczyk capped the Adirondack scoring effort as the Phantoms improved to 4-1-0-0 on the season.
Portland kept an up-tempo offensive pace throughout the contest, even with rookie forward Andy Miele being recalled to Phoenix shortly before gametime, but it would not be enough to crack Leighton or the Adirondack defense as they dropped to 2-2-0-1 through the first five games.
After a scoreless first period where the Pirates outshot the Phantoms 13-7, Brown capitalized two minutes into the second off a pass from behind the net from Roe to give the visitors a lead that they would not relinquish. Roe joined the rookie scoring party eight minutes into the third period on a power-play goal from Zolnierczyk and Tom Sestito, and Zolnierczyk added a power-play score of his own with 55 seconds remaining to send Adirondack to their fourth win of the season.
The Pirates out-shot the Phantoms by a 35-23 margin as Leighton remained undefeated with a 4-0-0 record. Curtis McElhinney received the loss in net for Portland, falling to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from Adirondack: 1. Leighton; 2. Roe; 3. Brown.
