The final homestand of the 2015 season continues Friday at 7:05 p.m. on Batman Night, with an autograph signing by the original Catwoman Julie Newmar, the Batmobile, Bat-fireworks and more. Complete promotion details below...
The Red Wings are now 10-7 against the Chiefs this season. .
Wings starter Bowden started off strong, and got some help from his defense. After striking out the leadoff batter, James Beresford came to the rescue, making a diving catch on a hard-hit line drive. Bowden completed the 1-2-3 inning by striking out the next batter he faced.
The scoring started early for the Wings, as Danny Santana got the bats going with a leadoff double and ended up on third after some heads up base running and a throwing error on the play. Beresford came up big again nailing a base hit, scoring Santana. The scoring was far from over for the Wings, as a walk to Xavier Avery, and a base hit by Kennys Vargas loaded the bases. Josmil Pinto took advantage of the sitting ducks, and smacked a grand slam. Two batters later, Eric Fryer got in on the scoring spree, launching a solo home run of his own, putting the Wings up 6-0 at the end of the first.
Bowden dominated in the early going, pitching a perfect game through three innings before allowing his first hit in the fourth. An error and a sacrifice fly to advance a base runner to third, and Bowden found himself in his first bit of trouble. With runners on the corners, Bowden was able to strike out the next batter he faced, and forced a pop out to end the inning and the scoring threat.
Chiefs starter Taylor Jordan (4-5) had his night come to an end in the fourth inning. Jordan pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, seven hits, and one walk. Jordan threw 77 pitches, 53 for strikes.
Bowden continued to pitch solidly late into the game, allowing only three hits through six innings. In the seventh, Bowden allowed a ground rule double and a base hit in consecutive bats to put runners at first and third. Everything seemed to be going Bowden's way, however, as he struck out Darin Mastroianni to end the inning and record his ninth strikeout of the game, a season high.
Bowden's (10-4) night ended after a very strong outing. Bowden pitched seven innings, surrendered five hits, hit one batter, and struck out nine. He threw 104 pitches, 72 for strikes.
Danny Ortiz knocked a base hit in his last at bat of the night, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Mark Hamburger took over in relief of Jordan, and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four in the process.
