Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Looking to snap a three game losing streak, the Mud Hens rolled into Columbus on Thursday night after playing them in Toledo on Monday through Wednesday. Toledo broke out the late inning theatrics against the Clippers, but it wasn't enough for a victory. The Hens were an out away from sending the game to extra innings, but a two out hit against them produced a run to give Columbus a thrilling 4-3 victory.

The Clippers struck first in the third inning with two runs off of Tim Melville. After giving up a lead off single to Ryan Rohlinger, Erik Gonzalez hit a one-out home run to right field to put Columbus up 2-0. In the fourth, Anthony Gallas extended the Clippers' lead with a two out RBI single, putting them up 3-0. It wasn't until the fifth inning that the Mud Hens would get on the board. With two outs, Dean Green launched his first Hens' homer with a solo shot to right center field to cut the lead to two.

Toledo got busy in the eighth inning where they mounted a comeback against starting pitcher Toru Murata. Alexi Casilla led off the inning with a double, and then Dixon Machado followed with a walk to knock Murata out of the game. Giovanni Soto came in as relief, but threw a wild pitch to Steven Moya to advance both base runners. Moya then responded with a single to right field to score both runs and tie the game 3-3.

For the evening, Melville ended up pitching pretty well for the Mud Hens, tallying a quality start in the process. He lasted six innings, allowing three runs on only five hits and one walk. He also punched out five Columbus hitters along the way. After he exited, Rafael Dolis came in and threw a scoreless seventh inning. Jose Valdez took over for the eighth and punched out two en route to a scoreless inning. In the ninth inning, Valdez came back out to try and force extras.

The pesky Clippers wouldn't go quietly though, as Gallas led off the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved him up to second and then Michael Martinez singled and moved up to second on an error. With two outs, power hitter Jesus Aguilar was intentionally walked to load the bases. That decision would come back to haunt Toledo, as Adam Moore singled up the middle to send Columbus home walk-off winners.

The Mud Hens cap off their series against the Columbus Clippers on Friday night at 7:15 p.m.
