Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Lefthander Zach Phillips pitched seven masterful shutout innings against the Cedar Rapids Kernels Thursday night, ending a five-game losing streak for the Clinton LumberKings in a 1-0 victory. Phillips (W, 2-3) set down nine Kernels for strikeouts and was aided by a sharp defense in a thrilling one-run contest. He and the bullpen combined to allow just four hits.

Robert Mosebach (L, 3-4) was equally sharp for the Kernels, but took the loss allowing just one run in eight innings. He kept his defense active, inducing the L-Kings into three double plays while striking out just two batters.

The LumberKings scored the one and only run of the game in the third inning, as Truan Mehl grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with no outs, scoring Joe Kemp from third base. Although Mehl didn't get credited for an RBI, it did prove to be the difference. Six players had a hit apiece for the L-Kings.

Josh Giles and Jose Marte each worked scoreless innings out of the pen to preserve the win. Marte (S, 3) worked a perfect ninth inning to record his team-best third save.

The LumberKings head back out on the road for a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Game one of the series pits right-hander Jake Rasner (3-4) against lefty Justin Thomas (4-5) for Wisconsin.
