MWL1 Cedar Rapids Kernels

Mosebach sparkles, offense sputters as streak ends

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Robert Mosebach (3-4) hurled his first complete game of the season but his teammates mustered just four hits as the LumberKings defeated Cedar Rapids 1-0 at Alliant Energy Field.

The loss dropped the Kernels record to 25-29 and snapped a modest winning streak at four games.

The only run the LumberKings managed came on a 4-6-3 double play grounder by Truan Mehl in the third inning that plated Joe Kemp. That would be all the offense lefty Zach Phillips (2-3) would need to earn the victory. The victory was Phillips' first since April 8th.

In the top of the second inning the Kernels loaded the bases with no outs when Stantrel Smith reached on a sacrifice attempt that resulted in an error when second baseman Jose Vallejo pulled his foot off first base while taking the throw. However, Tyler Johnson rapped a grounder to third that led to a putout at the plate, Marco Albano whiffed, and Brad Coon flew out to left to end the Kernels threat.

Mosebach lowered his ERA to a paltry 3.17 while surrendering just six hits to the LumberKings. He fanned two and walked just one while looking for offensive support that never came.

Jose Marte pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save for the Texas Rangers affiliate. Flint Wipke was the lone star at the plate for the Kernels as he gathered two of the four Cedar Rapids hits, including a double that led off the second.

After eight games on the road the Kernels now return home for a brief four-game homestand with the Burlington Bees, the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Friday's contest at Veterans Memorial Stadium will feature right-hander Tommy Mendoza (2-5) against Burlington's Chris Nicoll (3-2). It will be Pat McGrath Used Car Night with three lucky fans (age 18 and older) will drive away from the stadium in a free used car.
