Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Reading, Pennsylvania- Tuffy Gosewisch went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the Reading Phillies beat the Portland Sea Dogs 8-3 on Thursday night. Reading earns a four-game series split with Portland after the Sea Dogs took both games in a doubleheader between the two teams yesterday. Matt Rusch (0-1) pitched into the sixth inning in his Portland debut. The righty gave up five earned runs and struck out seven. Les Walrond (4-1) got the win with two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.

Gosewisch led the offensive attack for the Phillies, finishing a triple shy of the cycle with three RBI on the night. He boosted Reading early with a solo home run off Rusch in the second inning. That blast made it 2-0 Reading. The catcher led off the fourth inning with a single and was erased on a botched hit and run attempt at third base. In the sixth, Gosewisch ripped a one-out double to score Brett Clevlen from first base as part of a three-run inning. He also added an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh to complete his three RBI night.

Rusch was signed by the Red Sox organization earlier in the week and assigned to Portland. He had previously been with Quebec of the Canadian-American Association. While he gave up nine hits, Rusch only walked one compared to seven strikeouts. He escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the fourth inning by taking advantage of Gosewisch's caught stealing at third base. Rusch then struck out Ozzie Chavez to end the threat.

Will Middlebrooks, Mark Wagner and Oscar Tejeda each had an RBI for the Sea Dogs. Wagner hit an RBI double to cut the Phillies' lead in half in the third inning. Middlebrooks launched a solo home run off starter Joe Esposito to start the sixth inning. After a Jon Hee double, Tejeda also smacked a two-bagger to bring in Hee with the third Portland run. Hee, Wagner and Tejeda all enjoyed a multi-hit night.

The Sea Dogs head back to Portland tomorrow for the start of a six-game homestand against the Binghamton Mets and Harrisburg Senators. The Sea Dogs will celebrate Irish Night tomorrow night against the Mets, so be sure to wear your green. The team travels to Boston for its Futures at Fenway game against Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
