Nine-Run Ninth Lifts Fisher Cats Past Curve

(Altoona, PA)-The Fisher Cats exploded for nine runs on nine hits in the top of the ninth inning to beat Altoona 11-2 on Thursday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.

The game was tied 2-2 entering the ninth inning. Moises Sierra walked and moved to second on a groundout by Danny Perales. Mark Sobolewski (2-for-4, 2 RBI) singled Sierra in to put New Hampshire up 3-2. Yan Gomes homered (his 11th), Mike McDade added a three-run double, Sierra singled in a run and Jonathan Diaz drilled a two-run single in the biggest inning of the year. The nine hits recorded in the ninth was a new franchise record.

Evan Crawford (3-4) earned the win in relief.

The Fisher Cats (69-55) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sierra singled, moved to second after Perales walked and scored on a single up-the-middle by Sobolewski.

New Hampshire scored another run in the top of the fourth inning. Sierra doubled and stole third, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Perales to put the Fisher Cats up 2-0.

Nestor Molina worked the first five innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing two hits and no runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine in a strong start.

Altoona (56-67) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Wes Etheridge. Greg Piclat, Brock Holt and Josh Rodriguez all singled to load the bases with one out. Matt Curry grounded to Mike McDade who forced the runner at second, but the relay by Kevin Howard missed Etheridge covering at first and Altoona tied the game on the error at 2-2.

The Fisher Cats open a three-game series in New Britain on Friday at 7:05pm. Coverage with Dick Lutsk begins with the OCE North America Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network. RHP Yohan Pino (3-6, 4.11) starts for New Hampshire against RHP Bobby Lanigan (6-9, 4.73) for the Rock Cats.

The Fisher Cats return home on Monday (August 22) to open the final homestand of the regular season with a 7:05pm game against Trenton. An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game, fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo for great prizes, and it will be Hospitality Olympics Night as we pit local restaurants and hospitality organizations against each other in an Olympics style competition, sponsored by Performance Food Service NorthCenter.
