Phelps leads \'Birds by Sounds

Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis earned a series split with a 5-1 win over Nashville Thursday night at AutoZone Park in front of a season-high 15,688 fans.

The Redbirds were clinging to a one run lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Josh Phelps came up big. The ‘Birds first baseman tripled into the right-center field gap to score two runs and give the Redbirds a 4-1 lead. Phelps scored on Nick Stavinoha's single one batter later to set the final score. Memphis took the lead in the seventh on Bryan Anderson's run scoring single. Phelps finished the night 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Anderson went 2-for-3.

Clayton Mortensen was strong for the fourth straight start and won his fourth straight game for the ‘Birds. The right-hander scattered six hits and allowed one run over seven innings. Derrick Turnbow took the loss for the Sounds after giving up one run on two hits in one inning. Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin gave up one run on three hits in six innings.

The ‘Birds will play at Omaha tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium. Right-hander Mike Parisi gets the nod for Memphis against Omaha's Brandon Duckworth.
