New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

On their Independence Day celebration, the New Orleans Zephyrs got late fireworks from Valentino Pascucci, but it was not enough to overcome the Oklahoma RedHawks. Pascucci's two-run homer in the eighth tied the score, and he came to the plate in the ninth in position to win the game, but the Zephyrs squandered a scoring chance and went on to lose in 11 innings on Thursday, 5-3.

The Z's loaded the bases with one out against Oklahoma reliever Wes Littleton, and Raul Casanova came up already with three hits in the game. But Casanova swung and missed on a 1-2 pitch that hit him, thus striking out rather than ending the game.

Pascucci was given a chance to drive in the winning run, one inning after he tied the game with a two-run homer off Brian Gordon. With the count full, Littleton stepped off the rubber, catching third base runner Anderson Hernandez in a rundown that ended the threat.

Travis Metcalf led off the 11th with a double, and loaded the bases on a walk and a fielding error by Ivan Maldonado. Joaquin Arias then grounded a ball past a drawn-in infield, scoring two runs.

Maldonado (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs and three hits with three walks in one inning.

Littleton (7-1) pitched 1.2 innings to pick up the win, and Paul Kometani tossed a perfect ninth to record his first save.

New Orleans finished the season series with Oklahoma tied 8-8.

The Z's travel to Albuquerque to open a three-game series against the Isotopes on Friday at 8:05 p.m. CT. RHP Claudio Vargas gets the nod for the Zephyrs, facing RHP Gaby Hernandez.
