Iowa Cubs News Release

Casey McGehee's three hits helped propel the Iowa Cubs over the Omaha Royals, 6-9, at Principal Park in front of 12,581 people before a holiday fireworks show Wednesday night. McGehee helped fuel an Iowa offense that had seven extra base hits, including his two-run shot in the third inning. Micah Hoffpauir hit an RBI double with two outs in the first inning to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. Omaha tied the game 1-1 in the third inning when Ryan Shealy homered, however the tie wouldn't last long. Iowa reclaimed the lead, 4-1, in the bottom of the inning when Bobby Scales scored on a balk and McGehee hit his 10th home run, a two-run shot to left field. The Royals trimmed the lead 3-2 in the fifth but Iowa answered back with three runs for a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. Jason Dubois singled before Hoffpauir doubled. With two men on, McGehee singled for his third hit of the night. McGehee finished the night 3-for-3 with four RBI. Scales was 3-for-4 on the night with three runs scored. Omaha rallied for three runs in the sixth inning thanks to two home runs. The Royals and Cubs added another two runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the 6-9 final. Iowa's starter J.R. Mathes (6-3) earned the win allowing four runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings pitched. Omaha's Carlos Rosa (3-2) was tagged with the loss.
