Pheasants Win Fourth in a Row

SIOUX FALLS- It seems as if Mother Nature does not like when the Lincoln Saltdogs and Sioux Falls Pheasants face off.

On a blustery evening Monday at Sioux Falls Stadium, the Pheasants beat Lincoln 7-4 in the second rain-shortened contest between the two teams this year. The sqauds completed 5 1/2 innings before the rain came.

Pheasants starter Chris Salberg (1-3) notched his first win of the season, giving up four runs on seven hits through six innings. Francisco Leandro led the offensive charge with a four-RBI night.

Sioux Falls took advantage of Lincoln mistakes throughout the game, capitalizing on two errors and several defensive miscues. Strong winds gave Lincoln outfielders trouble tracking fly balls all night long.

In the third inning after a base hit by Henry Contreras, Joe Anthonsen reached on a sacrifice ground ball to second. Kevin Carby then pushed a bunt single past both pitcher Lindsay Gulin and first baseman Phil Hawke.

Leandro then cleared the bases with his second double of the game on a ball misplayed by Gavin Dickey in center field, giving the Pheasants a 3-0 lead.

The Saltdogs answered in the top of the fourth. After a long at-bat, Maikel Jova smashed a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to cut the Pheasants lead to 3-2.

The Pheasants loaded the bases again in the bottom half. An error by third baseman Brandon Jones brought home Trevor Lawhorn, and a second run scored on a sacrifice fly by Leandro, extending the Pheasants lead to 5-2.

Sioux Falls loaded the bases for the third-consecutive inning in the fifth, and again took advantage. Gus Milner dropped a two-run double down the right field line to give the Pheasants a 7-2 lead.

Salberg crusied through five innings, giving up just the home run to Jova. Back-to-back doubles by Hawke and Jon Nelson plated two runs as the Saltdogs cut the deficit to three. But after Jova popped out, Salberg struck out the next two Lincoln hitters, stranding runners at second and third to keep the score at 7-4.

Leandro saw two pitches in the bottom of the sixth before the umpires halted the game.

Gulin (1-4) took the loss for Lincoln, pitching five innings while giving up seven runs on nine hits. Jova and Hawke each had two RBI for the Saltdogs.

The victory extended the Pheasants season-best four-game winning streak. Sioux Falls looks to continue their winning ways against Lincoln at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, at Sioux Falls Stadium. Tuesday night is Double-Play Tuesday at Sioux Falls Stadium. Fans can purchase two tickets for the price of one.
