Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Gary SouthShore RailCats opened a four game series in Iowa with the first meeting against the Sioux City Explorers since 2005, suffering a 9-1 loss on Memorial Day.

Sioux City took advantage of gusting winds in the first inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead when Derek Schermerhorn homered over the fence in left. The Explorers used the longball in the second to help propel a five-run inning and take a 6-0 advantage against RailCats starter Scott Shaw. Ray Serrano connected on a two-run homer to left. Mike Murphy added an RBI double and Dustin Jones an RBI single all before an out was recorded. Another run came across on a fielder's choice.

A member of the Northern League through 2005, the X's tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fifth, with scoring on a two-out double from Jones to knock in Wally Backman, Jr. Sioux City pushed the advantage to 8-0 with a run in the sixth. The RailCats finally broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh. Toddric Johnson led off with a triple, the third of the game for the 'Cats against Ty Marotz. Johnson trotted home on a sacrifice fly from Chris Carrara. Marotz twirled seven innings to earn the win in his second start, scattering five hits to go with a walk and five strikeouts. Shaw pitched six innings in suffering the loss.

The RailCats pounded three triples in the game. Mike Massaro and Brad Boyer tallied their second of the season in addition to Johnson. Johnson made a diving catch in right field to end the third and keep the X's off the board in the frame. Massaro tallied two hits in the contest and Zeb Engle finished out the game, allowing an unearned run in the seventh. The RailCats (7-10) have dropped three straight for the second time this season, but won three straight following the last such streak.

The series will continue tomorrow in Iowa with RHP Jack Frawley (1-2, 7.58) climbing the hill for the RailCats against Sioux City's RHP David Trahan (0-0, 1.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
