Sioux City 9, Gary SouthShore 1
All but two Sioux City batters picked up at least one run Monday night, while every single one reached first base. The nine RBI were rather evenly distributed among the lineup, with CF Dustin Jones and and 3B Wally Backman leading the way with two apiece. Sioux City starting pitcher Ty Marotz earned the win, giving up one run on six hits and a walk in seven innings while striking out six Gary SouthShore batsmen. Sioux City SS Derek Schermerhorn and C Ray Serrano each picked up solo home runs on the night. For Gary SouthShore, CF Mike Massaro went 2-4 to lead the way.
Sioux Falls 7, Lincoln 4 (6 innings)
Monday's contest was called after six innings due to rain, with Sioux Falls picking up a three-run victory. The Pheasants scored two or more runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, stretching into a comfortable lead before Lincoln answered with a two-run sixth. But the baseball gods shunned Lincoln's bid for a comeback. Before the decision to cut the game short was made, Sioux Falls LF Francisco Leandro had batted in four runs on two doubles in two at-bats. Lincoln RF Maikel Jova and 1B Phil Hawke each went 1-3 with two RBI to pace the Saltdogs.
Fort Worth 7, Wichita 6
Trailing 4-0 after five innings, Fort Worth had apparently seen that goose egg on the scoreboard long enough. The Cats put seven runs on the board in the final four innings with 3B Travis Metcalf ruining Wichita fans Memorial Day with a ninth-inning homer that gave Fort Worth its only lead of the game. It was Metcalf's sole hit in four at-bas. Cats relief pitcher Nick DeBarr threw two hitless innings and picked up his second win of the season. Wichita jumped out in the early innings thanks in large part to a two-run Evan Button home run in the fourth. Button went 3-3 with three RBI, but it wasn't quite enough for Wichita to pick up the win.
Fargo-Moorhead vs. Winnipeg (Postponed)
The game between Fargo-Moorhead and Winnipeg was postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a double-header Tuesday with both games lasting seven innings.
Grand Prairie 5, Kansas City 2
Early runs and a solid all-around performance from the Grand Prairie pitching staff helped the AirHogs take a three-run victory over Kansas City on Monday night. Five AirHogs pitchers combined to allow two runs ¬" both solo home runs ¬" on six hits in nine innings of work, led by starter Jason Jennings, who is now 2-0 ont he young season. Jennings allowed one run on two hits and three walks with one strikeout. AirHogs 3B Cesar Nicolas sparked the offense, going 2-3 with three RBI, two of which came on a third-inning home run. Jimmy Mojica and Nick Farnsworth accounted for the two Kansas City runs.
Amarillo 14, St. Paul 6
Every player in the Sox' starting lineup crossed home plate in an offense-packed showing against the Saints of St. Paul on Monday. At opposite ends of the lineup, leadoff man Fehlandt Lentini and No. 9 batter Jason White had game-leading, three-RBI performances, with White reaching base three times in four at-bats. Five of St. Paul's six runs came in the eighth and ninth frames with the game firmly in Amarillo's hands. RF Brandon Tripp spurred the Saints' late rally with a two-run homer in the eighth. St. Paul added three more runs after the shot, but it wasn't enough to catch Amarillo.
Shreveport-Bossier 8, El Paso 2
The Captains scored three runs apiece in the second and fifth innings, bookending single-run third and fourth frames, jumping out to a big lead that held for a six-run win against the Diablos. Captains starting pitcher Ryan DiPietro earned his fourth win of the season, pitching seven innings of two-run baseball, allowing six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. The Captains' Brian Sabatillo went 4-5 with two RBI while Brian Peterson also batted in two on a 3-4 night. For the Diablos, Chad Gabriel scored a run on an impressive 3-4 night.
