Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Sox starting pitcher Matt Elliott run support has saved him in previous three starts, but it wasn't necessary as he allowed only one run and struck out a season-high ten St. Paul Saints as the Sox defeated the Saints 14-6 on Monday night in front of 5,625 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Elliot (2-0) went six-and-one-third innings, and walked only one batter in the effort. St. Paul starter Alain Quijano (1-2) got the loss, allowing ten hits and ten runs in five innings pitched. Every single Sox batter scored a run on the game.
The Sox got on the board first in the second inning as Lee Cruz singled and went to third on a Benji Johnson double. Van Pope hit an infield single to score Cruz, while Johnson scored on an RBI single from Jason White for a two-run lead. Amarillo added three more off one hit and four walks in the third inning for a 5-0 advantage.
The Saints got their first run in the fourth inning as Jason Cooper doubled and scored on a Brandon Tripp RBI single to drop the score to 5-1.
Amarillo continued the onslaught in the fourth inning as White singled and scored on a Fehlandt Lentini RBI double. Lentini stole third and scored on a Matt Tucker sacrifice fly for to give the Sox a 7-1 lead.
White added two runs on a bases loaded single in the fifth, while a Matt Tucker sacrifice fly scored Adam De La Garza from third for a nine-run advantage. Amarillo added more on in the seventh as Chris Nash hit an RBI double to score Van Pope from second, while Lentini singled to score Nash. Cyle Hankerd doubled home two runs to give the Sox a 13-run lead.
The Saints brought home four runs in the eighth, including a two-run homerun from Tripp, but reliever Corey Bass allowed a run in the ninth and shut the door on the Saints in the ninth to preserve the win 14-6.
With the win, the Sox improve to 6-10 while the Saints fall to 11-5.
