Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-6 to the Fort Worth Cats at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.

The Wingnuts twice led by four runs, but the Cats scored over their final four at bats to tie the game and eventually take the lead on a Trent Lockwood solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.

With the Wingnuts leading 6-2 in the top of the seventh, Fort Worth scored two runs on a two-out, two-run double to left-center field by Marcos Rodriguez. Starting pitcher Jonathan Ellis was then relieved by Jared Simon who retired Metcalf to end the inning.

The Cats loaded the bases with no outs against Simon to start the eighth inning. Trent Lockwood doubled to right-center. John Allen drew a walk and then Kelly Gulledge was hit by a pitch. Cephas Howard took over for Simon and retired Derek Kinzler on a sacrifice fly to center field that cut the lead to 6-5. Cory Morales grounded a hit-and-run single through the left side that scored Allen to tie the game. After a single by Cameron Monger that re-loaded the bases, Howard kept the game tied by inducing a double play ball off the bat of Brian Fryer.

After the Wingnuts were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, Lockwood homered with one out in the top of the ninth to complete the Cats' comeback. On 2-1, Lockwood took a close pitch near the inside half of the plate that was ruled a ball by home plate umpire Ben Levin. Wingnuts' catcher Edwin Bellorin was ejected after arguing the pitch. After Lockwood's home run on the next pitch, Wingnuts' manager Kevin Hooper was ejected by Levin as well.

Evan Button gave the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, hitting a two-out RBI single to shallow left field. Button capped off a three-run rally in the fourth with a two-run, opposite field home run that made it 4-0. It was Button's first home run of his professional career. Josh Workman hit an RBI double earlier in the inning to drive in the Wingnuts second run.

After Fort Worth scored two against Ellis in the fifth, the Wingnuts scored twice more in the bottom half. Workman led off with a long home run, just to the left of center field. Later in the frame, Ryan Patterson knocked a two-out RBI single to left that increased Wichita's lead to 6-2.

Ellis took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs in 6.2 IP. Ellis struck out one and walked one, allowing eight hits. Ellis did not allow a run over the first five innings.

Wade Mackey started for the Wingnuts and also took a no-decision. Mackey allowed six earned runs on 11 hits, walked two, and struck out zero.

Nick DeBarr earned the win, taking over in the eighth and pitching two scoreless frames. DeBarr worked a perfect ninth inning on three groundball outs to end the game.

Button finished 3 for 3 with a walk and was a double shy of the cycle. Workman was a triple shy from completing the circuit.

The Wingnuts and Cats continue their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Justin Murray makes his Wingnuts' debut and takes on Cats' right-hander Tyler Seamon. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
