Pheasants Sweep St. Paul Before Biggest Crowd of Season

SIOUX FALLS -- The Sioux Falls Pheasants scorched the St. Paul Saints on Sunday afternoon for a 13-6 victory, completing a three-game series sweep before the largest crowd of the year, 3,315, at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Pheasants (15-14) first series sweep of the year pulled them even with St. Paul for second place in the North Division ahead of a three-games home series with first-place Winnipeg on Monday.
Mark Shorey gave the Pheasants an early 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the first inning after Trevor Lawhorn's double tied the game. Jake Taylor chipped in an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
The Pheasants bats matched a season-high with 20 hits, and led 13-1 after seven innings.
"We had good at-bats all day long and stayed after them all day long, and good things happened," said Pheasants hitting coach Andy Juday.
Pheasants batters paraded 11 men to the plate in a five-run fifth inning. The first four reached safely, scoring three runs before the first out was recorded. Shorey added two more RBI with a single and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. Jared Bolden's RBI infield single capped the rally for a 9-1 lead.
Cristian Guerrero smacked a three-run home run in the seventh inning, his league-leading 10th of season and second in two days, plating the final runs.
Pheasants starter Peter Gehle (2-2) worked seven innings, allowing one run on ten hits, striking out three and walking one batter on 116 pitches.
"I just kept getting ahead and kept the ball down," said Gehle. "When you get ahead, it gives you a lot more options for strikes and gets them to chase pitches."
Both clubs combined for 36 hits, 30 of which were singles. The clubs tallied 85 hits total in the three-game series. The Saints cracked 41, but Pheasants pitching limited them to just three extra-base hits.
Saints starter T.J. Wink (1-1) took the loss on short rest. He pitched four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking one.
The Saints scored five runs in the eighth and ninth off the Pheasants bullpen.
The Pheasants start a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, June 18, against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Sioux Falls Stadium. "Kids FREE in June" continues. Two tickets for children 12-and-under are free with every regular-priced adult ticket purchased. It's also Meineke Monday. Fans in attendance will receive discount coupons for Meineke service.
Notes: The crowd was the largest since August 27, 2010, vs. St. Paul...The Pheasants also had 20 hits against St. Paul on June 8.... The most runs the Pheasants have scored in a game is 14, on June 8, at St. Paul.
