
Explorers Fall Short of Sweep

Sioux City-----In a see-saw battle Sunday night at Lewis and Clark Park, Winnipeg defeated the Explorers 10-9. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Explorers who took three of the four games from the Goldeyes.
After Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Explorers came back with four tallies in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run home run by Ray Serrano and a solo shot by Ryan Priddy. The back-to-back home runs gave the Explorers a 4-1 lead. However, in the fourth inning Winnipeg touch starter Nick Schumacher for four runs as the Goldeyes regained the lead 5-4. The Explorers tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the fifth inning. Winnipeg took the lead again with a run in the top of the sixth inning 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Explorers went ahead again on RBI doubles by Michael Lang and a RBI single by Kris Sanchez and the Explorers led 7-6. Winnipeg then scored three runs off relief hurler Geno Glynn and the Goldeyes led 9-6. Winnipeg added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, which they would eventually need and led 10-7 going into the bottom of the ninth. Ray Serrano led off the ninth with a single followed by a bunt single by Ryan Priddy. Wally Backman, Jr. reached first on an error by Winnipeg second baseball Price Kendall that loaded the bases for the Explorers with nobody out. Adrian Martinez the drove home two runs and the Explorers trailed 10-9, but the X's could not come any closer. Ryan Priddy with four hits and Michael Lang with three hits led the 18-hit attack by the Explorers. In relief Alex Jones got the win for Winnipeg while Kaohi Downing recorded the save with Geno Glynn taking the loss for the Explorers.
Sioux City will begin a three-game series Monday at 7:05 at Fargo/Moorhead against the RedHawks. The Explorers will return home Thursday to start a four-game series with Central Division leading Wichita at Lewis and Clark Park.
