St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 17, 2012) - The hits just kept on coming for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. The problem, however, is the St. Paul Saints collected a season high 16 hits, 15 of them singles, while the Sioux Falls Pheasants pounded out 20 hits, tying a season high given up by the Saints, in 13-6 loss for the Saints.
The two through six hitters in the Pheasants line up all collected three hits with Cristian Guerrero roping two doubles and a homer with four RBI and scoring four runs while Mark Shorey drove in three.
With the Saints trailing 4-1 in the fifth, the Pheasants started to distance themselves with a five run fifth inning. They sent 11 men to the plate getting an RBI double from Guerrero, a two-run single from Shorey, a sacrifice fly from Cory Morales and an RBI single from Jared Bolden. Eight of the nine starters for the Pheasants collected hits.
The Pheasants scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh on Guerrero's three-run homer, giving the Pheasants a 13-1 lead. It was Guerrero's league leading 10th long ball of the season.
The Saints offense pounded out a total of 41 hits in the three game series, but 38 of them were singles. The only extra base hit on Sunday was Jim Rapoport's double to lead off the game, extending his hitting streak to a career tying high 11 games. Rapoport has now led off five straight games with a base hit and led off seven straight games by reaching base safely. Rapoport would score on a single by Shane Costa, but the Saints wouldn't score again until the eighth. Rapoport finished the game 3-5.
Tanner Townsend and Jose Hernandez also collected three hits for the Saints and eight of nine players collected at least a hit for the Saints.
The Saints now head to Haymarket Park to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs in a three game series beginning Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (1-2, 10.18) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Ryan Sheldon (3-1, 2.41). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
