Pheasants Lose Nail-Biter to RedHawks

SIOUX FALLS- It was a tale of two games in a Sunday matinee featuring the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Sioux Falls Pheasants.

In a seesaw battle that saw Pheasants starter Adam Cowart carry a no-hitter into the sixth inning, the RedHawks outlasted Sioux Falls 5-4 to complete the series sweep at Sioux Falls Stadium.

With the RedHawks leading 4-1 in the seventh, Brandon Sing's three-run double to left-center field cleared the bases and evened the score. Fargo-Moorhead retook the lead in the eighth on a wild pitch from reliever Dan McDaniel (1-1).

Casey Hoorelbeke (1-1) earned the victory, giving up four hits in two innings of work, while rookie Kevin Fuqua collected his first professional save.

For the second-straight game, the Pheasants outhit the RedHawks but came up just score in the run column.

"We had a couple opportunities early in the game and we didn't get it done," said manager Steve Shirley. "It's just frustrating right now."

Cowart was perfect through 4 2/3 innings thanks in part to a nifty sliding stop by Pheasants third baseman Trevor Lawhorn to retire Jim Fasano in the fifth. Cowart walked the next batter Carlo Cota to end his bid for a perfect game.

"I felt good out there," Cowart said. "Everything was working for me early and later I was falling behind guys and they took advantage."

The Pheasants scored first against Fargo-Moorhead starter Scott Fogelson when Henry Contreras led off the fifth with a solo home run, giving his battery mate a 1-0 lead. Contreras had a big day behind plate as well, throwing out two runners in the sixth.

Cowart lost the no-no, shut out and lead on one pitch to Mike Coles, whose home run carried through the wind and over the right-center wall to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

"I wasn't really thinking about it," said Cowart of the no-hit bid. "I was just letting the guys do the work behind me."

Sioux Falls rallied in the bottom half, loading the bases with one out. But Fogelson induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of Hunter Jobes to escape unscathed.

Fargo-Moorhead took advantage of the same situation in the seventh when Kole Zimmerman looped a two-run single into left center to increase the RedHawks lead to 4-1. Shirley made a call to the bullpen, with Cowart completing 6 1/3 innings while giving up four runs on five hits.

"I thought Adam pitched fine," Shirley said. "He gave us a chance to win and that's all you can ask for."
