Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the top of the ninth, falling to the St. Paul Saints 3-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Craig Maddox helped the RailCats break through in the top of the fourth against St. Paul starter and former Second Round Pick of the White Sox, Matt Long. Chris Carrara opened the fourth with a single and Lorenzo Scott answered with a double to place runners at second and third. With one out, Toddric Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Maddox made the Saints pay by delivering a two-out single to right to hand the RailCats a 2-0 advantage.

St. Paul responded in the bottom of the inning, turning an error into an unearned run. Jason Cooper reached on a two-base error and scored when Brandon Tripp stroked a single to center. The Saints took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, finally touching RailCats starter Scott Shaw. Cooper opened the inning with a walk and crossed the plate with the tying run on a Ronnie Bourquin double, the second of three in the frame. Jonathan Van Every finished the scoring with a double to right, driving home Bourquin with the deciding run. Shaw pitched seven innings in the contest, his longest outing of the year, but suffered the loss despite allowing just four hits and two earned runs.

The RailCats (16-14) attempted to rally in the ninth against St. Paul closer Robert Manuel. Maddox was hit by the first pitch of the frame and was lifted for pinch runner Mike Valadez. Pinch hitter Brad Boyer doubled into the right-center gap, but Valadez was thrown out at the plate attempting to score the tying run. Boyer moved to third on the play but was left there as Manuel netted the save.

Cristian Guerrero posted three hits in the game for the RailCats. Scott tacked on two as well. James Baker pitched the eighth.

The roadtrip continues tomorrow night as the RailCats travel to meet the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in North Dakota. First pitch is at 7:02 p.m. RHP Jack Frawley (2-2, 4.85) starts for the RailCats opposite RHP Alex Caldera (2-0, 4.26).
