Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

GARY, Ind. - Two four-run innings by the Gary SouthShore RailCats were too much for the Sioux Falls Pheasants in an 8-4 loss on Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. Steel Yard. The Pheasants dropped the rubber game of the series and finished a six-game road trip at 3-3.

In the second inning, the RailCats used a walk, four hits and a sacrifice to plate four runs off Pheasants starter Peter Gehle (0-1). Mike Rohde's single brought home the first run, and the RailCats never trailed.

Gehle, activated yesterday from the disabled list, made an emergency start for an ailing Alan DeRatt suffering from the flu. He could not escape the fourth inning before back-to-back two-RBI hits scored four more runs. Gehle last 3 2/3 innings and allowed all eight run on nine hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Trevor Lawhorn's RBI double in the top of the fourth scored the Pheasants first run. Jonny Kaplan knocked in a one in the seventh on a groundout. Cristian Guerrero, a former RailCat, cut the lead to 8-4 on a two-run home run in the eighth, his third of the year and second in as many days.

Derek Drage (1-1) earned the win for Gary SouthShore with one run allowed on three hits in five innings.

Kaplan doubled in the ninth to extend a season-opening hitting streak to 12 games, but Jared Bolden went 0-for-5 to break his 11-game hitting streak. The Pheasants managed just six hits, and Lawhorn was the only Pheasant with multiple hits. He was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Sioux Falls Pheasants relief pitching continued a superb start to the season. Jack Van Leur, Dan Cooper and Cody Evans shut out Gary SouthShore in the last 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Van Leur threw 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

The Pheasants return home to begin a seven-game home stand, beginning with the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's a Throwback Thursday. Fans wearing Sioux Falls baseball gear, past and present, can gain admission for just $5. Former Pheasant and two-time Player of the Year Beau Torbert will return to Sioux Falls for the first time since 2010. He is the hitting coach of the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Notes: Trevor Lawhorn's double was the 74th of his Sioux Falls career, one shy of leader Felix Pagan...Gary SouthShore left fielder Adam Klein had nine putouts, setting a new American Association game record for an outfielder...To make room for Pete Gehle, the Pheasants released LHP Andrew Liebel. Liebel was 0-3 with a 20.03 ERA in three starts.
