Welcome to the newest Phantom, Derek Whitmore, and congratulations on your two-goal game on Sunday to be named the Saratoga Spine, Phantoms Player of the Week!

Last Week

Friday, March 14: Hartford Wolf Pack 2 - Adirondack Phantoms 1 (SO)

Former Phantom Danny Syvret burned his ex-team with a late tying goal on the power play with just 3:44 remaining allowing Hartford to post yet another come-from-behind win. The game was the opener of an away 3-in-3 for the Phantoms on the weekend. Chris VandeVelde had staked the Phantoms to a 1-0 lead early in the first period with his 10th goal of the season and from then goaltender Yann Danis was nothing short of brilliant. But Syvret's blast through traffic following a hooking call against Jason Akeson which the team strongly disputed finally evened the score for the Pack. Adirondack killed off another late power play to make it to the end of regulation and from there almost won the game in the closing seconds of overtime. But in the shootout, Danny Kristo of Hartford finally broke through on Danis in the fifth round while Dov Grumet-Morris was perfect. Danis made 32 saves on 33 shots in the shootout-loss.

Derek Whitmore made his official Phantoms debut and brought terrific energy to the ice teamed with his new linemates, Ben Holmstrom and Nick Cousins.

Saturday, March 15: Hershey Bears 4 - Adirondack Phantoms 1

Adirondack outplayed Hershey for much of the first and second periods at Giant Center in ChocolateTown but came away with a 3-1 deficit for all their hard work. The Bears added another in the third period in front of the largest regular-season crowd in Giant Center history, 10,995. It was Adirondack's first game against former teammate Kris Newbury who was loaned by Philadelphia to Hershey earlier in the week. Cal Heeter saw game-action for the first time sinc ehis goalie-fight game of February 16 almost exactly one month earlier.

Derek Mathers scored his second goal in three games with a chip of a Kyle Flanagan feed from the corner midway through the first period. But Brandon Segal blasted the equalizer with just two seconds left in the period. and Ryan Stoa added another a few minutes into the next frame. The real back-breaker though came with one minute left in the second period on a wildly errant sapper by Brandon Segal that went off the hand or arm of Michael Latta in the slot. The Bears forward was merely protecting himself from getting clobbered by Segal's slapper that was so far wide in front but it ended up deflecting perfectly into the goal. Adirondadck had out-shot Hershey 16-8 in the second period but it was the Bears who were able to convert on their chances to help David Leggio earn the win.

Sunday, March 16: Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5 - Adirondack Phantoms 4

Early penalty trouble led to a 2-0 deficit in the first period and then eventually the Phantoms were down 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second period. Adirondack staged an impressive series of comeback goals including a pair from Derek Whitmore, the first of his career as a Phantom. But Adirondack was only able to close the gap down to one on a trio of occasions and were never able to find the tying goal. Nick Cousins and Brandon Alderson also scored for the Phantoms, both of them registering power-play goals. Kyle Flanagan had three assists and Adirondack was 3-for-5 on the power play. But it would not be enough as Kevin Poulin nabbed the win over Yann Danis. Jeremy Langlois scored the first two goals of his AHL career and Andrew Clark also had a two-goal game.

Upcoming Opponents

Utica Comets (27-27-7) - Affiliation, Vancouver Canucks

Friday, March 21 (7:00) - Memorial Auditorium, Utica, NY

Standings - 11th place, Wastern Conference

Season Series - Adirondack is 2-0-0 vs. Utica this season. This is Game 3 out of 4.

Last Meeting - March 1, ADK 3 - UTI 2

Top Scorers - Pascal Pelletier (12-36-48), Ben Ferriero (19-20-39), Cal O'Reilly (2-29-32)

Info - The Comets have won five of their last six to pull within eight points of Rockford for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Not bad for a team who opened with 10 consecutive setbacks at the beginning of their franchise. After their 0-8-2 start, Utica has been a playoff-caliber team with a mark of 27-19-5. Their head coach is former NHL veteran Travis Green who many locals may remember as a player with the old Capital District Islanders for three seasons from 1990-93. The Phantoms are 2-0 against the Comets this year including an exciting 3-2 win in their last visit to the Aud just three weeks ago. Tye McGinn blasted the game-winner with just 2:58 to go in that one.

Hartford Wolf Pack (26-29-7, 59 points) - Affiliation, New York Rangers

Saturday, March 22 (7:00) - Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY

Standings - 12th place, Eastern Conference

Season Series - Phantoms are 2-5-2 vs. Hartford. This is Game 10 out of 10.

Last Meeting - March 14 - HFD 2 - ADK 1 (SO)

Top Scorers - Oscar Lindberg (14-23-37), JT Miller (12-23-35), Danny Kristo (18-15-33)

Info - The young group of potential future Rangers seems to have gelled of late. The Wolf Pack have gone 8-3-1 in their last 12 games and they are 16-9-2 since ending a six-game losing streak on January 17. They went through a 4-19-3 stretch from early November through mid-January but very much have gotten their game together since then. Their leading scorer, Oscar Lindberg, is a 22-year-old rookie from Sweden enjoying success in his first season in North America. J.T. Miller is next in limited playing time with the Wolf Pack in his second pro season due to his call-ups to the Rangers where he has three goals in 28 games this year. His 12 goals and 34 points in the AHL have come in only 29 games. The first round selection in 2011 (#15 overall) led Team USA to the 2013 World Juniors Gold Medalin Ufa, Russia with a team-high nine points including seven assists. Former Phantoms and Flyers on the Wolf Pack include Danny Syvret, Darroll Powe and Aaron Asham.

Syracuse Crunch ( 24-27-10) - Affiliation, Tampa Bay Lightning

Sunday, March 23 (5:00) - Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY

Standings - 13th place, Eastern Conference

Season Series - Phantoms are 1-1-1 against Syracuse. This is Game 4 out of 6.

Last Meeting - March 2, ADK 3 - SYR 0

Top Scorers - Jon Marchessault (14-28-42), Vladislav Namestnikov ((17-22-39), Brett Connolly (15-24-39)

Info - Syracuse advanced to the Calder Cup Finals last year and much of the team were with Tampa's previous affiliate in Norfolk the season before when they won it all. But this year has been a bit different for them. Struggling through injuries and call-ups, the Crunch have not had as much success. They recently dealt defenseman Matt Taormina and forward Dan Tyrell over the Blue Jackets organization and received high-scoring Jonathan Marchessault in return.

Goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis became world-famous when he led Latvia in their attempted upset-bid of Canada at the Olympics. The 21-year-old posted a spectacular goaltending performance with 55 saves on 57 shots in a 2-1 loss to the high-powered Team Canada squad. Shea Weber's power-play goal with 6:54 remaining broke the late 1-1 tie as Canada out-shot Latvia 57-16 in the February 19 quarterfinal classic.

25 Terrific Seasons

Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of just 9 other active markets who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979. In their 20-year tenure at the Glens Falls Civic Center through 1999, the Red Wings won four Calder Cups. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-10 and are in their fifth season bringing exciting AHL action to the North Country.
