Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Having to stand tall in the final minute, Jacob Fowler made some of his biggest stops of the night, denying the Muskegon Lumberjacks the tying goal as the Youngstown Phantoms (26-19-5-4, 61 points) prevailed with a 4-3 victory at the Covelli Centre Saturday night.
"(Fowler) was terrific," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "He made some big stops in the second when (Muskegon) really controlled play. Those last two or three minutes (of the third period) he made some really big ones."
Owen Mehlenbacher scored an extra attacker goal with 1:42 left in the third to bring the visitors back within a goal, firing home a one-timer from the inside edge of the right circle. Grant Porter and Garrett Wright had scored earlier in the third period to give Youngstown a 4-2 advantage and break a 2-2 tie.
Kyle Bettens scored the first two goals of the game for Youngstown, his goals sandwiched around a pair of goals for the Lumberjacks that gave Muskegon a 2-1 lead in the middle part of the second period. Muskegon only held the lead for 94 seconds before Bettens tied the game. "(Bettens) is a powerful skating forward," said Patterson. "He gets rewarded by putting the puck in the net. He's always going to get those rush offense chances. He was one of the guys that had continuous energy, and that's what we needed tonight."
Joey Larson scored his 30th of the season in the final minute of the first to tie the game heading into the locker room for the first intermission. Mehlenbacher scored his first of the game at 9:24 of the second, giving Muskegon their temporary lead before the second Bettens goal. Bettens opened the scoring at 10:10 of the first period, firing a wrister through traffic from the right wing wall that found its way past Chase Clark (14 saves).
Youngstown clinched the season series over Muskegon with the victory this evening. The Phantoms trail the Lumberjacks by a single point in the Eastern Conference standings with eight games remaining as the teams battle for the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference. The two teams wrap up their season series Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Centre with a 4:05pm puck drop.
