Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa - It took over 56 minutes into regulation to get the first one, and just under 90 seconds into the extra session to get the game-winning goal. Down a goal late in regulation, William Hallén tied the game, and the league's leading scorer, Stephen Halliday, notched the overtime winner to put the Dubuque Fighting Saints over the Waterloo Black Hawks 2-1 on Saturday night at Young Arena.
Waterloo came close to ending the game on a centering pass that deflected off of bodies in front of the net, but the puck eventually stayed out. Samuel Sjölund ripped a long pass up ice to catch Halliday in a 2-on-1 break with Connor Kurth. Halliday's pass ricocheted off of Black Hawks defenseman Ben Robertson and past goaltender Emmett Croteau to give the Fighting Saints the victory. It was Halliday's 31st goal of the season.
Philip Svedebäck stopped 18 of 19 shots fired his way for his second consecutive first-star performance on the weekend. The Swede denied 42 of 44 shots on the weekend, good for a .954 save percentage. His best save came just before the Fighting Saints tied the game. John Waldron broke in on an odd-man rush, and the pass across found its target. However, the deflected puck met Svedebäck's pad.
Moments later, the Fighting Saints tied the game.
At 5-on-5, the Saints found their stride. Tristan Lemyre provided puck support on a failed Waterloo clear. Max Montes centered the puck to the right circle, and Hallén lifted the puck over Croteau's shoulder for his seventh goal of the season.
The Black Hawks got the game's first goal late in the second period. Waldron won a faceoff in the offensive zone right back to Ray Fust, who zipped the puck into the back of the net to get the scoring started.
Dubuque had a golden opportunity to tie the game almost immediately after. Patrick Geary and Mason McCormick were nabbed for penalties at the same time, which led to a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power play time. However, Waterloo's penalty kill came through and canceled out the opportunity.
The Fighting Saints return to action on Friday, April 8 and host the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
