Mehlenbacher Pots Two, Lumberjacks Fall Just Short in 4-3 Loss to Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Muskegon Lumberjacks forward Owen Mehlenbacher potted a pair of goals, but the Jacks came up just short, dropping game two of the three-game weekend series to the Youngstown Phantoms by a final score of 4-to-3 on Saturday, April 2, 2022, from the Covelli Centre. Joey Larson would add the other Muskegon lamplighter, but it ultimately wasn't enough in the one-goal loss. Muskegon has now lost three consecutive games but remain in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with 62 points and an overall record of 28-20-3-3.

1st Period

About halfway through the first period, Youngstown struck first with a goal from Kyle Bettens 10:10 into the opening stanza. Bettens's 14th goal of the season was assisted by Stiven Sardarian and Kenta Isogai to make it a 1-to-0 lead for the Phantoms.

Muskegon would get on the board at 19:35 of the period with Joey Larson's 30th lamplighter of the season to level the score 1-to-1. Larson's 60th point of the season went unassisted.

Through one period of action, both teams headed to the dressing room knotted up 1-to-1.

2nd Period

About halfway through the second period, the Lumberjacks earned their first lead of the weekend courtesy of Owen Mehlenbacher at 9:24 of the period. Mehlenbacher's 11th goal of the season was assisted by Jake Richard to put Muskegon up 2-to-1.

Youngstown responded 94 seconds later with Kyle Bettens's second goal of the game to even the score 2-to-2. Jaden Grant and Tyler Catalano assisted on Bettens's 15th goal of the season at 10:58 of the middle frame.

Like the first period, each team came away with one goal in the 2-to-2 game, and through 40 minutes, the score remained tied.

3rd Period

Youngstown regained the lead 2:22 into the third period with a goal from Grant Porter to give the Phantoms the 3-to-2 lead. Porter's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Sitven Sardarian and Kenta Isogai to put Youngstown up by one.

The Phantoms would double their lead after a goal from Garrett Wright 7:25 into the final period of regulation. Wright's 15th goal of the season was assisted by Justin Varner and Byard Hall to put Youngstown up by a deuce.

With the goalie pulled, the Lumberjacks received a goal from Owen Mehlenbacher, his second of the game, at 18:18 to put Muskegon within a goal in the 4-to-3 game. Mehlenbacher's 12th goal of the season was assisted by Jake Richard.

Muskegon would empty the net once again, looking for the equalizer, but it was not to be as the Youngstown Phantoms held on for victory, narrowly defeating the Lumberjacks by a final score of 4-to-3 in game two of the three-game weekend series.

On Deck

The Lumberjacks will put the final stamp on their three-in-three set against the Youngstown Phantoms on Sunday, April 3. Faceoff is scheduled for 4:05 pm EDT from the Covelli Centre situated in Youngstown, Ohio. Sunday's matinee contest will begin the following day April 3 with puck drop slated for 4:05 pm EDT for game three.
