Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A bad bounce made the difference in a 2-1 Waterloo Black Hawks overtime loss to the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Young Arena on Saturday.
Tied 1-1 a minute-and-a-half into overtime, Stephen Halliday sped into the offensive zone, angling through the left circle. His attempted centering pass turned into the game-winning goal when it deflected off a backchecking Waterloo defender and past Emmett Croteau.
The Saints had forced overtime by scoring with 3:32 to go in regulation. Max Montes was below the icing line and feathered a pass to William Hallen. The Swedish forward fired in the equalizer from near the right faceoff dot.
In the opening period, the biggest highlight had come 30 seconds after puck drop. Halliday forced a turnover and had a breakaway which originated near the center circle; Emmett Croteau denied his low shot, with the rest of the period played as a scoreless stalemate.
Much of the second was scoreless too, until 17:06. That's when John Waldron won a draw back to Ray Fust at the top of the left circle, and Fust triggered a quick shot that beat Philip Svedeback to his stick side. Waterloo didn't have much opportunity to celebrate; before a minute of game action passed, the Hawks were two-men shorthanded. However, they fended off Dubuque's five-on-three power play, making it to intermission with the 1-0 lead.
Waterloo ended the night five-for-five on the penalty kill; the Fighting Saints outshot the Hawks 27-19.
The final Fleet Farm Friday at Young Arena is coming up next weekend when the Hawks host the Fargo Force. One lucky fan in attendance will win a Fleet Farm gift card during the 7:05 p.m. matchup. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
