Norfolk Admirals News Release
Despite firing 39 shots on net, the Admirals were unable to solve Philadelphia netminder Martin Houle, as the Phantoms shut out Norfolk 5-0 on Wednesday night at the Wachovia Spectrum.
Pat Kavanagh gave the home team the lead while the teams skated four-on-four. The right winger sent a shot from the left circle that goaltender Corey Crawford stopped. However, he found his own rebound in the crease and stuffed it home 10:37 into the opening period. The Phantoms stretched their lead two a pair of goals just over five minutes later on the power play. Ryan Ready finished a back-door play by one-timing a cross-crease pass from Kavanagh into the back of the net at 15:42. Philadelphia out-shot Norfolk 10-4 in the period and took a 2-0 lead into the second stanza.
The Admirals came out of the locker room firing the puck in the second period, sending 23 shots on net as opposed to Philadelphia's seven. However, Phantom backstop Martin Houle made several big saves to keep his team up by two goals after two periods.
Philadelphia salted the game away in the first minute of the final frame. Marc Cavosie stole the puck behind the Admirals' net and sent the centered it toward the slot. Tony Voce one-timed the pass into the goal 36 seconds into the period. Twenty seconds later, the Phantoms broke in two-on-none on Crawford, with Ben Eager converting the breakaway at 0:56. Voce added a power play marker at 10:18 to close out scoring at 5-0 in favor of Philadelphia.
Corey Crawford made 21 saves on 26 shots and was saddled with the loss. Martin Houle stopped all 39 Admirals' shots on the way to the shutout victory.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Philadelphia was 2-4.
