Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Greensboro, N.C. - Jacob Pettit held the Greensboro Grasshoppers scoreless over seven innings and Jonathan Schoop had four RBIs to lead the Shorebirds to a 6-2 win in game one at NewBridge Bank Park. The win snaps a four-game losing streak.
Delmarva plated the first run of the game in the first inning. Trent Mummey led off with a lined single to left-center field. Jonathan Schoop advanced Mummey to third with a soft line drive into center field. Then, Manny Machado hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the âBirds a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds built a comfortable lead in the third. Justin Dalles and Brenden Webb got things started with back-to-back singles. With one out, Jonathan Schoop blasted a two-run double off the base of the center field wall to score both Dalles and Webb. Two batters later, Kieron Pope hit a single to right field to plate Schoop, which gave the âBirds a 4-0 lead.
Shorebirds starter Jacob Pettit stifled the Grasshoppers in seven innings. He retired the first eight batters and 11 of the first 14 hitters for Greensboro. Pettit allowed just four hits. He induced two critical double play balls in the fifth and seventh innings. He is the first Shorebirds pitcher to finish the seventh inning this season.
The Grasshoppers had their best chance to score in the fifth inning. Brian McConkey led off with double to the left-center field wall. The next batter, Jacob Realmuto singled to right field. McConkey turned third and tried to score on the hit but was thrown out at the plate by Brenden Webb.
Greensboro scored their first runs in the eighth inning off relief pitcher Clay Schrader. Jacob Realmuto walked to open the frame. Then, Pedro Mendoza grounded towards Mike Flacco, who fired wide of Machado at second to put runners at second and third. Wilfredo Gimenez followed with a sacrifice fly to the wall in left field to bring home Realmuto. The next batter, Dan Black, hit a double to left-center to trim the deficit to 4-2. David Walters entered with two outs in the eighth and retired Ryan Fisher.
Jonathan Schoop gave the Shorebirds more insurance in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs and Justin Dalles aboard, Schoop crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Shorebirds a 6-2 lead. He finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game two of the series on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park. RHP Scott Copeland is scheduled to start for Delmarva.
