Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Four Augusta runs in the second inning drove the GreenJackets to a 5-3 win in their home opener against the West Virginia Power on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The GreenJackets took advantage of a West Virginia error in the inning to put two men on for Jeff Arnold, who singled home a run to give Augusta a 1-0 lead. Ryan Scoma tripled home two more to push the lead to three runs. Scoma scored on a groundout to finish the damage of West Virginia starter Zack Dodson.
Dodson (0-1) threw four innings, retiring the side in the first and third but having trouble in the even-numbered frames. He allowed four runs - two earned - on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
West Virginia cut the lead in half in the fifth, scoring twice in an inning that began with back-to-back singles. A fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt led to the first Power run while an RBI groundout brought home run number two. Augusta got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Carlos Willoughby scored from third on a wild pitch to push the lead back to three runs.
The Power got a run in the eighth on a two out single from Justin Howard to make it a 5-3 game but they wouldn't get any closer. Drew Bowlin got out of the eighth with no further damage while Stephen Harrold survived two ninth inning walks to earn his first save of the season. The Power were just 1-9 at the plate with runners in scoring position, stranding ten men aboard.
Austin Fleet (1-1) picked up his first win of the season by throwing five innings and allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits and a walk while striking out four.
The GreenJackets will send Edwin Escobar (0-1) to the mound in the second game of the series on Saturday night against Tyler Waldron (1-0). First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
