Peterborough Petes News Release
(Peterborough, ON) - The Peterborough Petes are proud to announce that they have selected Peterborough native Jon-Randall Avon in the first round, eleventh overall in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection presented by Real Canadian Superstore.
Avon, a 5'9.5", 173lbs centre, led the minor midget Peterborough Petes during the 2018-19 season with 24 goals, 25 assists, and 49 points.
"Jon-Randall is an explosive skater that has another gear when he needs it," reported OHL Central Scouting. "He is a tireless worker that is always competing each and every shift."
"We're very excited to add J.R. to our club," commented Petes Head Scout Chris McNamara. "He's a dynamic forward with great speed and acceleration, is very dangerous on the rush, and has great offensive tools."
"I'm really excited to be drafted by my hometown team; it's an honour," J.R. added. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the OHL."
Jon-Randall is the highest draft pick out of the Peterborough Petes minor hockey system since Corey Perry was selected 5th overall by the London Knights in 2001. He is the step-son of Hockey Hall of Fame member Steve Larmer. His brother, Chad Heffernan, played four seasons in the OHL with the Belleville Bulls, Sudbury Wolves, and London Knights.
